Great article Katherine! This made me hopeful, as a Millennial woman, that we might finally be approaching a solution to the work vs. family dilemma outlined so starkly in Anne Marie Slaughter's "Why Women Still Can't Have It All" published years ago. I've always believed it takes a village to raise a child, and more broadly, to weather the vicissitudes of life for the individual. We've been forced to be ruthlessly self-sufficient because where the best jobs are rarely overlaps with where our families are. Hopefully remote work is here to stay, and its attendant flexibility makes "having it all" possible.
Now in Aug 2022 almost after 16 months of your article; things have started changing, companies are calling more n more employees to work from offices; even hybrid model is getting pushed down slowly.
As most managers-leaders think remote work model does not bring same set of productivity or innovation.
Going forward I wont be surprised that things return to what they were pre-covid maybe in another 2-3 years or so. Look at amount of new bigger commercial spaces are coming up from offices to malls. Clear indication we will go back to 2019 ways if not immediately but surely in 2-3 years time.
question remains is How should people make best of both worlds (life/family-career)?
Three excellent points that mirrors my own experiences:
• Zoom (WFH) may save the nuclear family. Working from home, I was able to see our son take his first steps, say his first words and grow a full set of teeth. This is something I would have probably missed pre-Covid.
• “Grandma in the Attic” model. We moved closer to my wife's mom in the South Bay of Los Angeles (The Suburbs—a place I swore I would never live) and it has significantly benefited our relationship/psyche. Both Obamas echo this in their books as a changing point in their marital relationship - when Michelle's mom came to help well before they ended up in the White House it changed the game for them.
• Zoom pregnancies. Because we don't meet in person anymore, this is definitely a thing.
I enjoyed reading this! As you know it’s a question we’ve grappled with and it’s a happy thought that a hybrid model might give people greater choice in how to structure their families. And of course, congratulations!
Awesome piece Katherine! Brilliantly filled with loads of education on the history of the typical American family while still feeling quite personal! Looking forward to seeing you back on zoom when the time is right!
This is exceptionally well-written - thank you Katherine! My sense in the tech community is that workers have the chance to vote with their feet on this, and that many, particularly those with families, will vote for a hybrid model to enable more flexibility. But we shall see.
